Karyn Godfrey and Devin Ficklin
Surprise woman jailed for lying to police about wreck, rape
SURPRISE, AZ - Authorities say a Surprise woman has been arrested for lying to police about a stolen car and sexual assault.
Surprise police said Karyn Godfrey, 33, reported that her vehicle had been stolen after officers found it damaged and driven into a wall at an apartment complex near Bullard Avenue and Greenway Road on June 5. Godfrey and Devin Ficklin, 18, also of Surprise, told police the vehicle had been stolen.
On June 9, Godfrey reportedly called police saying the report of the stolen vehicle was false, but that she had been forced to make that report by Ficklin at gun point.
Police say Godfrey went on to say that Ficklin had forced his way into her home, raped her then forced her and her 3-year-old son into her car. She said Ficklin crashed into the wall on Greenway Road and forced her to report the stolen vehicle. Godfrey produced two witnesses she said would corroborate her story about Ficklin, police said.
On June 16, detectives arrested Ficklin in Chandler and while he admitted that he and Godfrey did crash the car, the rape and kidnapping allegations were false. Ficklin said that a few days after the car crash he broke off the relationship with Godfrey.
Authorities say when detectives interviewed Godfrey's witnesses, they found inconsistencies with their stories. The witnesses then admitted their statements were false and had been made up with Godfrey to implicate Ficklin.
On June 30, Godfrey was interviewed again and she admitted that she had fabricated the story. Police say that when asked why, she told detectives she "was mad at Ficklin" because he had wrecked her car and had promised to stay with her but didn't.
Godfrey was arrested and charged with false reporting, conspiracy and false reporting emergency. She has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
Ficklin faces charges of false reporting, conspiracy and leaving the scene of an accident.
The two witnesses were charged with false information and conspiracy.
